Debbie was a unique individual and Debbie was SPECIAL to me. I can write with confidence that I am not alone and that many others share these thoughts. She and I met at St. James A.M.E. Church, (where her grandfather had once been a minister) in Sunday school. Our families were long time family friends. One day after church, Debbie came to my house to play. We were both in second grade. It was the first many visits, nor was I a stranger at the Cooper household.
Debbie was creative, brilliant, hilarious, and musical to say the least. She played and practiced the clarinet, though she loved that acoustic guitar of hers! Debbie also liked to read.
She made friends easily. A mutual friend and I were sharing a couple days ago. She said Debbie had introduced her to girls (now women) that are still her friends. I concur! Debbie was a special friend that introduced me to special people that have become lifelong friends, “The Group”.
Debbie Cooper taught me how to do the “Funky Broadway”, “Philly Dog” and the “Skate”.
She showed me how to comb my hair and dress. Arby’s has the meat, Debbie had the clothes, oh yeah!
A week before Debbie’s passing, we conversed on the phone. She had me “cracking up”! She was naturally good humored. As I mentioned previously, the chick was hilarious!!! As we talked, I noticed the speed of Debbie’s conversation was rhythmic and at a quickened pace I hadn’t heard in a few years. I shared my observation with her. No, she had noticed, but she was glad to know.
That was the last time we talked, but I don’t want that to will be our last conversation. Laughing and talking with Debbie was some some kind of special.
I LOVE YOU DEBBIE COOPER!!
